ProtonMail

ProtonMail is incorporated in Switzerland and all their servers are located in Switzerland. This means all user data is protected by strict Swiss privacy laws. ProtonMail uses end-to-end encryption and zero access encryption to secure emails. This means even they cannot decrypt and read your emails. As a result, your encrypted emails cannot be shared with third parties. No personal information is required to create your secure ProtonMail email account. By default, they do not keep any IP logs which can be linked to your anonymous email account.

ProtonMail is a very secure means of communication, especially when sending and receiving e-mail to and from other ProtonMail accounts. That being said, it is not perfectly secure. The Civil Liberties Defense Center (CLDC) (September 15, 2017) highlighted some potential security concerns. For activists who may be targeted by national level agencies, ProtonMail may not be the best choice for secure communications.

While there is a potential weakness in ProtonMail, we believe it to be more secure than other e-mail options, and recommend its use in place of Gmail, Yahoo, or similar web-based e-mail services. On July 2, 2019 the CLDC again address ProtonMail, saying "The CLDC has expressed reservations that ProtonMail may not be the best choice for activists. Despite the worrisome recent news, ProtonMail is nevertheless a reasonable choice for encrypted email. As a service that manages your encryption keys for you, ProtonMail can’t offer as strongly guaranteed security as classic PGP/GPG encrypted email. But if your group doesn’t have the time, capacity, or willingness for each member to spend ~90 minutes with the CLDC doing an email encryption training and providing ongoing support, ProtonMail might be the best choice for you."
